HotStuff VR Project

For this project, we were given an assignment by the school's training for

marketing and communication.

Their idea was to make a VR game aimed at students to make them more aware of fire safety in student housing.

After a lot of planning, we had the idea to put pressure on the player when they were testing.

The pressure would build up to deliver an experience that the player wouldn't forget.

When the game is over, someone would explain to the player how they died and how to prevent a fire from starting in their student housing.

Our idea was to put pressure on the player, for that we needed the apartment to be realistic enough so that the players would forget they are in VR. We tried to add as much detail to the apartment as possible to make it look like a real student house.

Then we used sound to overload the hearing of the player. We did that using multiple smoke detectors to have a constant beeping in the scene, also combined with the fire everything made a lot of noise so that helped with the effect.

When there was a lot of smoke and fire we reduced the player's vision with a vignette and reduced the distance the player could teleport.

We had 2 ways to play.

First, when you enter the living room/kitchen, you could prevent fires from starting by doing a certain action, for example, by putting a lit cigarette in the ashtray.

If there is a fire about to start it shows a smoke effect indicating that you need to prevent it from going up in flames. The smoke detector would also go off to indicate that something is happening.

If the fire becomes too much, there is a fire extinguisher that you can use to try and put out the fires that started. This was added to engage the player in a more immersive environment, now they have a feeling they're preventing and slowing down their death in the game.

For the VR implementation, we used the UnityXR asset.

The fire in-game we did not make ourselves, we used Ignis from the Unity asset store.

As the only programmer in the project, I did all the VR implementation and made most of the features.
